Steel City

Cultural Getaway

Friday-Sunday, June 28-30

Day One

Your senses will heighten as we make our first stop on this tour. In 1893, real estate and steel tycoon, Henry Phipps gifted the City of Pittsburgh with Phipps Conservatory. You will participate in a guided tour of this fourteen room Victorian era glasshouse, garden and tropical forest conservatory. Phipps Conservatory features lush exotic plants, palms, orchids, ferns and desert plants, as well as many special flower shows, exhibits, and a seasonal butterfly exhibit. Outdoor gardens and collections include the children’s Discovery Garden, the new Edible Garden, Japanese Courtyard Garden, bonsai, perennials, annuals,

medicinal plants and aquatic gardens. Following the tour of the

Conservatory we will travel to dinner at Buca di Beppo. Enjoy an authentic Italian meal served family-style in Station Square before retiring for the evening. Our lodging is at the Best Western Parkway Center Inn in Pittsburgh. Day Two

After a continental breakfast at our hotel, our day begins with a beautiful view of the City of Pittsburgh from the Duquesne Incline Upper Station. We will have a guided tour of the Station before riding the Incline to the Lower Station. Our motorcoach will pickup the group as our journey

through Pittsburgh’s history continues to the University of Pittsburgh’s

Cathedral of Learning. The Nationality Rooms, located in the Cathedral, are dedicated to the various ethnic groups which have made the Pittsburgh area their home. You will not want to miss the guided tour of this walk around the world. Our day is just getting started. The next stop on our Pittsburgh tour is the famous Strip District. The Strip District is a one-half square mile area in downtown Pittsburgh. Once a hub of produce warehouses due to its closeness to the Pennsylvania Railroad, the Strip is now known for produce and ethnic food stores, restaurants and coffee shops. You’ll have some free time in the Strip

District to explore and find the perfect restaurant for lunch (on own).

Our afternoon activity is a guided tour of the Frick Art & Historical Center. Our group will take part in a guided tour of “ Clayton,” the family home of Henry Clay Frick. “Clayton” was the Frick’s primary home from 1892 until 1905 when the family moved to New York City.
